The end of the world is nigh (and the start of a new one!)

There are so many worrying things going on in the world at the moment, it is enough to make you wonder how long it can all go on for before society just collapses under the weight of big pile of insurmountable problems. Perhaps most troubling of all is climate change which has led to such an increase in the frequency of natural disasters.

Very often when describing these things reporters and activists reach for biblical expressions to describe the magnitude of such events. So we hear about a “climate apocalypse” and forest fires that are “akin to Armageddon”. There is enormous concern about where we will eventually end up given the direction that things are going.

This fear about the future is something which was spoken about by the Lord Jesus in a prophecy which he gave about the days immediately before his return from heaven. He said “there will be signs in the sun, in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity, the sea and the waves roaring; men’s hearts failing them from fear and the expectation of those things which are coming on the earth” Luke 21:25-26 (NKJV)

Other biblical prophets are equally dire in their predictions of this time, describing city-levelling earthquakes, people hiding in caves in terror and, yes, a great battle at a location symbolically named “Armageddon”.
But before we run for the hills we should continue reading, because the same prophets also speak of a future time beyond all this trouble—a time of peace and plenty and fairness for all; an end of war, corruption and all evil things which spoil this age. It is called the kingdom of God. The Bible contains an invitation to anyone who is prepared to listen, to be saved from this future time of trouble and be blessed with a permanent residence in the age to come.
